Brief History

The first meeting of the Cable & Wireless Toastmasters Club U9140, formerly The Bartel Toastmasters Club, was held September 1992.  The forming of the Club was led by Able Toastmaster James Corbin, the then VP Education of Bridgetown and Divisional Manager, Information Systems of Bartel.  On the October 8th, 1992, the first executive was elected.

The Club was chartered to Toastmasters International in December 1992. The 1992-1993 Executive Members were:

President - Able Toastmaster James Corbin

VP Education - Ray Jackman

VP Membership - David Atherley

VP Public Relations - Arlene Brathwaite

Secretary - Sophia Gibson

Treasurer - Delora Brewster

Sergeant-at-arms - Adrian Lovell

The other eighteen of the twenty-five Charter Members of 1992 were:

Haldane Bowen, Yvonne Byer, Wendy Waterman, Maureen Browne, Sherwin Greenidge, Emmerson Marshall, Marilyn Legall-Mapp, Juliet Knight, Sylvanus Clarke, Moreta Forde, Erwin Waterman, Francis Farier, Olvin Collymore, Ruth Vaughn, Yolanda Thorpe, Janet Burrowes, Adlai Stevenson, Anthony Sue.

The first corporate Toastmasters club in Barbados, was originally started for company employees only but now opens its membership to anyone over eighteen.  Membership is by invitation and so I extend a personally invitation to you, to come see what Toastmasters is all about and if you like, become one of the 170,000 Toastmasters around the world.
