Here's some information on a little known program of Toastmasters International, the Gavel Clubs. This program allows students of secondary schools and colleges, as well as other groups of individuals who for one reason or another, cannot form their own clubs, to gain the development that is part of the Toastmasters experience. Gavel Clubs could be considered scaled down Toastmasters clubs. Clubs function the same way as Toastmasters Club but may meet less often. Members do prepared speeches and table topics just as a regular club. In Barbados progress in the education program is encouraged more on a group basis. Hence members pursue each speech project as a group, i.e. all members are encouraged to complete project one before moving to project two.

In Barbados there are two such clubs, The Rising Stars Gavel Club and Alexandra School Gavel Club. Both clubs came out of Youth Leadership programs conducted by the Sunjet Toastmasters Club. The members of the Alexandra Schools Gavel club or students of that school but membership in Rising Stars is open to students from schools across the island.
