Club Meeting

Our club meets on Thursdays at 5:30pm. If you are visiting Barbados and looking to attend a toastmasters meeting on Thursdays, come join us at Erdiston College. Need directions? Follow here!

Our History

The Sunjet Toastmasters club was formed in 1986. the second such club in Barbados it is presently the largest club in the island. Many may remember us as the club that met at the old Hilton Hotel. A few toastmasters has been with the club since its formative years. While those who started are no longer with club, the group is still a vibrant organization. The membership averages between 40 to 50 persons.

Meeting Format

BUSINESS SESSION
The club evening is split into two sections, the business session and the educational session. The format of the meeting is given below.

The meeting is called to order by the president and the evening’s prayer is offered by a Toastmaster.
Word of the evening is given by a toastmaster: for example, Word of the Evening as “Perpetuate” a verb meaning to preserve, cause to be continued or remembered.
The president welcomes all guest and persons present and the minutes of the meeting are read and adopted after corrections were made.
After this the club’s business is dealt with under the following heading a) Matters arising from the minutes b) excuses of lateness absence c) correspondence d) reports e) unfinished business f) new business g) other business. . The Toastmasters clubs uses the Roberts Rules of order as their parliamentary guide. A five-minute recess is declared to give members the opportunity to prepare for the Educational session.

EDUCATIONAL SESSION
In the educational session the following roles are assigned. Toastmaster of the Evening,General Evaluator, Grammarian/Word master, Parliamentarian, Table Topics Master, Ah/Am Counter and Timer. For a description role go here.

The chair is then turned over to the Toastmaster of the Evening who usually announces the theme for the evening.Table Topics are presented to a number of toastmasters and guests (if interested) The Best Speaker award is presented to the toastmaster who presents the best table topic. the Most Improved Speaker shield. At the end of the Educational session the chair is turned back over to the President.

A Parliamentarian’s tip is presented from the Robert’s Rules of Order Newly Revised 9th Edition and guests are invited by the President to give their impression of the meeting.The President then invites toastmasters to submit a quote and the meeting is then adjourned.

Club Membership

Club Membership is open to anyone in Barbados. However club membership is by invitation and all new members are voted in. Our membership is varied across various social backgrounds and religion. Club members includes, doctors, lawyers, teachers, civil servants, housewives etc and draw from various religious groups including, Catholics, Anglican, Pentecostals and Seventh-day Adventists.
