The Mission of Toastmasters clubs is to provide a mutually supportive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth. Toastmasters clubs are not charitable organizations and do not support community programs through financial assistance. However clubs do make an impact in their communities in other ways. These methods are determined by the club’s charter and include assistance in the formation and continuity provides to gavel clubs, youth leadership programs, members outreach etc. The Sunjet Toastmasters clubs for the past few years has been running the Youth leadership program. This is a six-week program in which youths from various schools or community groups are taught the rudiments of proper speech writing and delivery. At the conclusion there is a graduation at which participants prepare and deliver a speech to their peers and visitors. The graduation is typically and grand affair and is supported by the parents and relatives of graduates. The last two programs conducted by the club resulted in some 25 persons graduating as well as the formation of one Gavel Club. For more information on gavel clubs, visit local toastmasters page. Club members also avail themselves as judges and resource personnel for speech and debating workshops. Groups such as the UWI Cave Hill Debating society has previously requested the assistance of the club as it prepared its debating team for inter-campus debates. Even church and school groups have also requested the clubs assistance. The toastmasters program has proven to be an excellent learning ground for speech development skills and it members are always willing to assist local clubs and groups where necessary. Club members have over the years assisted in such functions as facilitators for Parliamentary workshops, Debating Skills workshops, Elements of good speech writing and delivery. Last year the club sponsored its first Primary School reading competition. This competition was held for Primary Schools in St.Michael and was a resounding success.
