Need help in understanding some of the terms used in a Toastmasters
Club? This list is sure to help.
During the meeting...
- General Evaluator
- The General Evaluator is responsible for evaluating the
entire evening proceeding. This is typically the last item of
the educational program before the Toastmaster of the evening
wraps up the educational session.
- Toastmaster
(of the evening) - This member acts as the meeting host during
the Educational session.
- Parliamentarian
- The toastmaster assigned this role can be called upon by the
President during the business session to give a clarification
on a matter of parliamentary question. The toastmaster performing
this role usually gives a tip at near the end of the educational
session.
- Table Topics
Master - The toastmaster assigned the role of conducting the
table topics session.
- TableTopics -The part of the
meeting where members get to think on their feet and speak for
a minute or two on a topic selected by the TableTopics Master.
Topics range from politics and current events to hobbies and entertainment.
Fast, lively and always entertaining.
- Ah/Am counter-
A member designated to note phrases (like "you know")
and sounds (like "ah" and "um,") that are
used as a "crutchwords" or "filler" by anyone
who speaks during the meeting.
- Timer
- A member designated to time the evenings proceedings. This includes
the length of the business session and all speeches, evaluations,
table topics and presentations given at the meeting.
- Grammarian/
Wordmaster- A member designated to introduce a new word to
the members for use during the meeting and to comment on how language
was used during the meeting.
- Evaluator
- A member designated to provide a brief evaluation of a fellow
member's prepared speech. Speakers get immediate feedback on how
well they accomplished their assigned objectives. This is what
makes the toastmasters movement so special.
- Prepared Speeches - Working from
manuals supplied by Toastmasters International, members present
speeches designed to develop specific skills.
Educational Awards...
- CTM -A CTM (Competent Toastmaster)
has completed ten prepared speeches from the Communication and
Leadership Program manual. This is the first educational award.
Speech objectives range from "Show What You Mean" and
"Vocal Variety" to "Organize Your Speech"
and "Inspire Your Audience."
- ATM -An ATM (Advanced Toastmaster)
is a CTM who has also completed all speech assignments from two
advanced manuals. The advanced manuals includes, 'The Entertaining
Speaker', 'The Story Telling', 'Interpersonal Communication',
'Speeches by Management' , 'The Professional Salesperson' and
'Technical Presentations'.
Club Programs...
- Joint Club Meeting - Special meeting
where two Toastmasters clubs have a joint meeting, with members
from both participating in the program
- Educational Speech - A short speech
on a speaking-related topic, presented during the meeting by the
President, VP Education or other experienced member.
- In-house Speech competition - A
meeting where the entire program is devoted to prepared speeches
from the members which are judged.
- Speechcraft Program - at which experienced
members present the fundamentals of public speaking to community
or company groups.
- Youth Leadership - A program conducted
by experienced members for people under 18 years old to help them
develop communication and leadership skills.
- Better Speaking - Series A
set of educational speeches developed by Toastmasters International.
